Garage Door Locks and Other Security Enhancements

Owning a  garage is great. It is rare that homeowners will tell you  that they do not  enjoy owning or utilizing their garages. As an  extension to our homes, we often  find that the things in our garage are  just as important as the things we keep  inside the walls of our home.  Boxes full of memories, sporting equipment,  bikes, holiday decorations,  mementos, and other valuables may take up residence  in our garages for  months, if not years, at a time.

Protecting  one’s garage and the items contained within it  is not something most homeowners  put on the back burner. In fact, it  should be a priority for every garage owner  to make sure to secure  their garages with the same gusto as they do their  homes.

One great  way that homeowners can add additional security to their garages is by adding  manual garage door locks

 Types of  Garage Door Locks

There are  two main types of garage door locks that are  most popular among homeowners.  Both of these lock types are very  affordable and great if you are looking to  add an extra layer of  security to your garage door.

 Slide  Locks

Sliding  garage door locks are placed on the interior side  of garage doors. Just like  the sliding door locks that you may have  seen inside residential properties,  sliding locks for garage doors work  similarly but are much stronger. Simply  sliding a bar into a  designated slot will secure the door in place. With one,  quick motion,  homeowners can secure their garages from the inside. Sliding  locks are  not a good option if your garage does not have a side door or other   access point.

 T-Handle  Lock

If you want  a lock on the exterior side of your garage,  you should consider purchasing a  t-handle lock. T-handle locks for  garage doors sit on the outside of your  garage just near the bottom and  in the center. The lock is shaped like a ‘t’  with the bottom of the  ‘t’ being placed on the garage door. This leaves the  upper part of the  t-handle to be used as a handle to pull up and pull down on  the garage  door.

In the  center of the t-handle lock is a keyhole. With the right key, homeowners can lock and unlock their garage doors quickly  and easily just as they would a  traditional lock. T-handle locks are a  great option if you do not have another  entry point into your garage.
 What  About Electronic Garage Doors?

The lock  types described above are ideal for manual garage  doors that are not attached  to motors. It should be noted that it can  actually be damaging to use either a  slide lock or a t-handle lock on a  garage door that has an electronic motor. If  you were to have the  manual lock set in place and then turned activated the  garage door,  this could easily burn out the motor or break it entirely.

However,  there may be some instances where you may want to  add a manual lock to your  motorized garage door. For example, if you  are leaving home for an extended  period of time or frequently travel  away from your home, adding a manual lock  can be helpful. That way, you  have an extra layer of security on your garage  door while you are  away. Plus, you will not have to worry about accidentally activating   the garage door while the lock is in place since you will be away from  home.  Just remember to unlatch or unlock and manual locks before  opening your garage  when you return.

Home Safe Perks and Benefits

One of the  most important features inherent to a home safe is the ability to store guns,  ammunition, hunting knives, and other weapons. If you are a gun owner, it is  important to have a place in your home where you can securely lock up your gun.  Especially if you live with roommates or young children, keeping your gun  locked in a safe when not in use should be a habit. By purchasing a home safe,  you can reserve space in your new safe for any weapons or guns that you may own. Know that in some areas, if you are a gun owner and have small children  living in your home, it may be mandated by the law that you to own a home or  gun safe. Be sure to ask a locksmith about the laws in your area if you are  looking into purchasing a gun safe and make sure you are in compliance with any  local, state, and federal laws when it comes to owning and storing your  weapons.

Keep  Children, Pets, and Visitors Protected

Your home  safe can serve multiple purposes, but one of the most important is to protect  children, pets, and visitors. Especially if you plan on storing guns or other  weapons, purchasing a home safe is a great way to keep those you love  protected. Keeping weapons and other items safely stored helps to protect  children and pets from injuring themselves. It also keeps visitors out of any  items that may cause harm or that you may not want on display. Medications are  another good item to keep in one’s home safe. Certain medications can be   harmful, if not deadly, to young children and pets. You can keep any medications  out of sight and know that they are also out-of-reach of anyone who should not  be taking them.

 Increase  Home Security

Overall,  purchasing a home safe increases your security and safety. Families that own  home safes experience less damage when it comes to robberies or break-ins since  their most valuable items are kept locked away. Most criminals will not dare  waste their time to try and open a safe. Usually, items that are within sight,  easy to grab, and potentially valuable are taken during robberies. If you own a  home safe, you can eliminate easy access to cash, identifying documents, and other valuable items.

 Increase  Peace of Mind

Whether you  are at home or on-the-go, owning a home safe will give you peace of mind  around-the-clock. You can count on your items remaining in your safe until you  move them yourself. Only the rightful owner to the safe and individuals who  know the passcode will be able to access the safe. As long as you do not share  your key or passcode with anyone, your safe is secure and only accessible by  you. Wanting to increase your peace of mind is a great reason to purchase a   home safe. No matter what you want to store, the items that are most important  to you will be protected from damage and theft.

Install a  Home Safe of Your Own Today!

Are you  ready to install a home safe? There are so many benefits to owning a home safe  that there is no reason not to. You can protect your most precious items from  theft and weather-related damages. Not to mention, you will also gain peace of  mind knowing that your most important documents are stored away safely at all  times. Whenever you are ready to make your home safe purchase, be sure to work with a local locksmith to help you go about choosing the right safe for your  home.
